There is something about Minnesota’s North Shore that makes it an incredible place to get married. The rocky shoreline, towering pines, and endless views of Lake Superior already make it feel like a destination without ever leaving Minnesota. Chris and Lauren’s MN North Shore Wedding at Superior Shores Resort in Two Harbors was the perfect example of just how beautiful a North Shore wedding can be.
And after watching storms roll across Lake Superior the day before, we couldn’t have asked for a better wedding day.

The day before Chris and Lauren’s wedding, Lake Superior was doing what Lake Superior does best…being completely unpredictable. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a moody North Shore day, just not for a wedding. The sky was gray, storms moved across the lake, and there was no telling exactly what the next day would bring.
Then the wedding day arrived, and somehow everything came together perfectly.
Chris and Lauren were surrounded by an incredible group of family and friends as they said “I do” along Minnesota’s North Shore. From the scenery surrounding Superior Shores Resort to the people who came together to celebrate them, it was one of those wedding days where everything simply felt right.
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings is getting to document more than the big, obvious moments. Of course there are the vows, portraits, first dances, and all of the traditional parts of a wedding day, but there are also the smaller moments happening in between. The reactions from family during the ceremony. Friends laughing together. The way a couple looks at each other when no one else seems to be paying attention.
Those are the photographs that bring you back to how the day actually felt.

If you’re dreaming of a wedding on Minnesota’s North Shore, Superior Shores Resort is one of those venues that gives you the full Lake Superior experience without asking your guests to travel between multiple locations throughout the day.
Located directly along Lake Superior in Two Harbors, the resort offers outdoor lakeside ceremony options, reception space, private beach access, catering, and accommodations for couples and their guests…all in one location. Not to mention their GORGEOUS new reception space.
And from a photographer’s perspective, the setting is hard to beat.
The rocky shoreline and Lake Superior create a backdrop that feels dramatic without needing much added to it. Depending on the weather, you can have everything from bright blue water and sunshine to the dark, moody skies the North Shore is famous for. That unpredictability is honestly part of what makes photographing weddings here so much fun.
There are beautiful photographs to be made in just about any kind of weather.

The North Shore has a completely different feeling than most wedding locations in Minnesota.
There is a quietness and sense of scale to Lake Superior that photographs beautifully. Instead of needing elaborate backdrops or perfectly styled spaces everywhere you turn, the landscape gets to do a lot of the work.
It’s also an incredible place for couples who want their wedding to feel like an experience.
Your guests aren’t simply arriving at a venue for a few hours and heading home afterward. A wedding in Two Harbors can easily become an entire North Shore weekend. Staying along Lake Superior, exploring the shoreline, and spending more time together before and after the actual wedding day.
For couples who care less about putting on a perfectly choreographed production and more about being present with the people they love, that kind of wedding weekend can be pretty special.
Some of my favorite parts of Chris and Lauren’s wedding were the things that simply felt like them, including making sure their dogs got to be part of the celebration.
Their pups joined us before the ceremony and came back out for cocktail hour, which was such a fun way to include them without having to worry about keeping them around for the entire wedding day. And, of course, having Lake Superior as the backdrop for photos with your dogs doesn’t hurt either.
They also found some seriously fun ways to keep their guests involved throughout the reception. They held a 50/50 raffle and played “Pass the Buck”, essentially hot potato, except instead of passing around a potato, you’re passing around money. Much higher stakes. (Don’t worry, you get your bill back!)
It was one of those little reception games that immediately got everyone laughing and involved, and it fit the atmosphere of the day perfectly. Between their dogs making an appearance, the games, and a room full of people who were genuinely excited to celebrate them, Chris and Lauren’s wedding never felt like they were simply going through a list of wedding traditions. They chose the things that mattered to them, added their own personality, and created a day that felt completely their own.

If you’re considering getting married at Superior Shores Resort, Two Harbors, Duluth, or somewhere else along Minnesota’s North Shore, I would absolutely love to photograph more weddings in this part of the state.
My approach to wedding photography is calm and intentional, with a focus on true to color images, genuine connection, meaningful details, and all of the moments happening naturally throughout your day. I’ll step in with direction when it’s useful and step back when the moment deserves room to unfold on its own.
Because a place like the North Shore doesn’t need to be turned into something it isn’t.
Neither does your wedding.
